Chapter Twelve

Cassie locked up her aunt’s station wagon and tossed the keyring in her purse. She’d purposefully driven downtown early so she could grab some coffee before she reported to the mayor’s office for her first day of work.

Her thoughts drifted to her job in New York City—the permanent one—she very much needed to keep.

To do that, she’d spent last night kicking around more pitch ideas and getting organized for the week. She’d outlined a temporary schedule to keep her on track, using the East Coast/West Coast time difference to her advantage. Getting up early was never a problem, so the plan was to put in half a day’s work for Burke & Taylor before she even left the farm. Then she’d make sure she kept up on e-mails throughout the day and put in at least another three hours once she got back to the farm.

Easy peasy. This was going to work.

That she now had an official government title in front of her last name was a bit surreal and definitely would take some getting used to.

“Hello. I’m Mayor Wilkerson,” she practiced under her breath while crossing the street, feeling more amused than serious.

She’d finally read Hank’s itinerary, which had been impressively thorough. But it only went through Sunday night’s dinner and hadn’t included anything about the inauguration. He’d certainly gotten her good with that prank. She hoped to never be within touching distance of a beehive again—real or fake.

Speaking of the little buzzers . . . She straightened her sweater over her new pencil skirt and rushed past the gazebo flowers that no doubt were a haven for the popular yellow and black resident.

“Cassie, hold up.”

She spun around to see Madison walking toward her, a green backpack slung over her shoulders. “Hi. Good morning.”

“Where’s your coat?” Madison asked, her eyebrow shooting up.

“I didn’t think I’d need one. I’m sure I’ll be fine.” Although the days seemed to warm up nicely, at least for late January in California, the mornings were quite nippy. Maybe she could pop into the Bee Beautiful Boutique during her lunch break and grab a light jacket.

Madison pulled off her backpack and shimmied out of her purple quilted coat. “You can borrow mine.”

“Oh, no,” Cassie protested. “That’s not necessary. I’ll be okay.”

“It’s fine. I’m plenty warm.” Madison handed over her jacket.

“That’s so nice of you.” Cassie took the coat, sliding her arms in. “Thank you for everything last night. The chili was amazing.”

“You’re welcome. It was my mom’s favorite recipe.”

“Was?”

“She passed away when I was seven.”

Cassie’s heart tightened. “I’m sorry to hear that.” There wasn’t a day that went by that Cassie didn’t think of her own mother’s passing, but she was grateful for the time they had together. She couldn’t imagine if she’d lost her at such a young age.

They stood on the corner for an awkward beat before Cassie nodded to The Bean & Brew.

“I was just getting some coffee. Can I get you one?”

“Uh . . .” Madison hesitated for a minute.
